Cutting Up ... Fabric

I've taken the plunge. I've started cutting the fabric for my Eventide Sew Along quilt. (no new photos at this point)

I was a bit hesitant after reading about Nicole's problems with her first choice of colors. I was even going to abandon this project and use the fabric for another project EXCEPT for the encouraging comments on my last post about my fabric choices (I do so appreciate your comments!) This afternooon I took my container with all my French General fabrics - Rouenneries, Rural Jardin, Lumiere de Noel and Maison de Garance - and sorted the fabrics by value - light, medium and dark. I didn't focus as closely on the colors so much as using the fabric that read strongly in each of the three values. Just making a decision to BEGIN has actually helped. I now feel motivated to work on my project.

Question for those of you working on Eventide? Did you cut the quarter square triangles the size printed on the pattern or did you cut them larger to resize the blocks?

Visit Thelmas' blog Cupcakes 'n Daisies to read about the updates and links to the other quilters participating in the Eventide  sew along. It's inspiring to see the many different versions of Carrie Nelson's Eventide.

I was so glad I have a big stash of fabrics to play around with. Once I realized I did not care for the deep blue in my large hour glass blocks, and switched it out for tan, I got much happier about my quilt. I can't wait to see how your beautiful French General fabrics work in your Eventide version.

Oh Becky, it is going to be beautiful in French General. I am collecting them too, for some future project. Did you change your background? I love it!

I cut my hourglass the same size, but should've cut them a little bigger I think. Definitely do a scant 1/4" seam, it makes it easier. I did a regular 1/4" and they've been coming out pretty good so far, but there is not much room for error. Also, I used the same fabrics, no dark blues, just the light blues and all of the reds. I had a problem when doing my star points with not enough contrast so I used some of the dark taupe from Le Petite Ecole...it is perfect complement. Have fun!

Your choices are so beautifull. I have cut them like printed, but used a scant 1/4 seam.

I made my hourglasses bigger. Rounded up to 4 1/2" then sewed into hourglass then used Tucker Trimmer ruler to trim it up and worked great. Glad you have lots of fabric to use. I squeaked by with my FQ bundle plus one extra FQ from another line. It's lots of cutting and sorting is very important and makes sewing MUCH easier.
